Design, Manufacture and Installation of over 250m of Stainless Steel Bump Rail

Project Overview

Aqualine by Alway was commissioned to deliver a stainless steel bump rail system for an expansion of a production facility operated by a well-known UK salad manufacturer. The client required a hygienic, durable, and low-maintenance impact-protection solution suitable for a high-care food environment.

The project required the design, manufacture and installation of over 250 metres of stainless steel bump rail, together with the installation of more than 40 stainless steel bollards to protect key access points and high-traffic areas.

Design

Given the operational demands of a busy food production facility, the stainless steel bump rail system needed to provide reliable impact resistance while supporting strict hygiene standards.

Our design team, through our Guardline range, has developed a tried-and-tested range of impact-protection products. On this project, we used Stainless Steel Bump Rails and Stainless Steel Bollards with a layout tailored to the project blueprint requirements. Careful consideration was given to:

  • Vehicle and trolley movement routes

  • Protection of wall panels and services

  • Ease of cleaning and washdown procedures

A specific project requirement was the inclusion of removable sections within the stainless steel bump rail system. These sections allow the client to move large machinery in and out of the facility when required. The removable design was engineered to ensure secure fixing, accurate alignment and straightforward reinstatement.

Manufacture

All stainless steel bump rail components were manufactured in-house, enabling close quality control and programme certainty.

Despite the scale of the installation, with over 250 metres of stainless steel bump rail required, the full project, including design, manufacture and installation, was completed within a four-week turnaround.

This integrated approach ensured consistency across fabrication and installation, while allowing responsive coordination with other trades on site.

Installation

Our installation team fitted the stainless steel bump rail system across production and circulation areas, ensuring consistent height, alignment and finish throughout.

In addition to the bump rail, over 40 stainless steel bollards were installed to provide enhanced impact protection at:

  • Door openings

  • Service entrances

  • Equipment zones

  • High-risk traffic points

Together, the stainless steel bump rail and bollards form a cohesive impact protection system that safeguards both the building fabric and operational assets.

Summary

The completed works provide a hygienic, durable, and easy-to-clean impact-protection system for the client’s expanded salad production facility. With over 250 metres of stainless steel bump rail installed, the system delivers consistent protection to walling, services and equipment across high-traffic areas, helping reduce accidental damage and ongoing maintenance.

The inclusion of removable stainless steel bump rail sections ensures that operational access for large machinery can be accommodated without compromising day-to-day protection. Combined with the installation of more than 40 stainless steel bollards, the project has created a cohesive, robust impact-protection solution that supports both hygiene standards and operational efficiency within the facility.
